About the Domaine:

The Domaine des Hospices de Beaune, often referred to as a "winemaking hospital," boasts a legacy of over 500 years of vineyard tradition. Its origins date back to 1457 when Jean Guillotte le Verrier made a donation of vines to the Hôtel-Dieu (the hospital in Beaune). This act of donating vines became a way for families and patients to show gratitude to the institution. Over the years, the wines produced from these vineyards, known as "Cuvée," often bear the name of the family who donated the plots of land.

Today, the estate spans 60 hectares, with 85% of the land dedicated to 1er Cru and Grand Cru vineyards. Each year, the wines of the Domaine des Hospices are sold during a prestigious auction, held on the third weekend of November, attracting wine enthusiasts and collectors from around the world.

Elevage (Aging Process):

In 2017, Ludivine Giveau became the head of the Domaine des Hospices de Beaune. At the auction, the wines being sold are very young, as the harvest typically takes place just a few months before. After the auction, the wines require careful aging, which is where the role of the "negotiator" comes in. For our family, this responsibility is taken on by my father, who has been expertly aging wines for over 35 years.

Once the barrels are purchased, my family works diligently for 16 to 18 months to ensure that the wines are properly aged, respecting the terroir and enhancing their nuances and complexities. This meticulous process allows the wines to evolve, revealing the full potential of the beautiful appellations produced by the Domaine.

Tasting notes:

Bright red color. On the nose, very pretty aromas of violets and red fruits. On the palate, well balanced wine with gentle tannins and harmonious length. This is a delicate and beautiful Beaune 1st Cru which will give you even more pleasures if you age it.
