Mylène, artistic director:
After studying cinema at the ENS Louis Lumière and graphic design at the Ecole Estienne in Paris, she worked for several years for major Parisian agencies before creating L'Atelier Letterpress with Denis in 2013. She is passionate about typography, calligraphy, vintage graphic design and music.
Letterpress: impression of emotion:
As soon as you run your finger over a model from L'Atelier Letterpress, the emotion is there, palpable. The old-fashioned printing has left a slight hollow in the raw and generous texture of our exceptional papers, giving full meaning to the vintage-inspired design.
Take your time... It's Slow Print:
Printing a pattern from L'Atelier Letterpress takes one to three days, a lot of patience, and requires all the know-how of our master printer, Denis. He starts by mixing the inks by hand and then inks the rollers, and when it is well distributed he positions the relief plate of the first color on Heidi, our beautiful Heidelberg press from the 50s. Heidi comes to life, begins to breathe (thanks to her pneumatic sheet picking system) and Denis begins the meticulous work of setting up the printing of the first color, until he obtains the desired inking, precision and sinking.
Once the first color is finished, he meticulously cleans the press to remove all traces of this first color, and repeats the same process to print the other color(s), paying attention to their balance while letting them live.
