An authentic, inspiring and original decoration
The Letterpress Workshop was born from our crush on this incredible printing technique with an immense emotional potential. When we discover the letterpress in 2011, it is in the midst of a revival in Anglo-Saxon countries but is almost unknown in France. After acquiring our firstHeidelberg press, we went to Australia and the United States for several months to train with references in this field, then back in France we opened L'Atelier Letterpress.
The Letterpress Workshop opened in 2013, and for several years we happily offered Letterpress quality for life's great moments by making refined and "haute couture" wedding and birth announcements. In 2020 we decided to bring the emotion of the Letterpress into your interiors by creating our first range of inspiring and authentic posters and cards.
Our eco-responsible approach: L'Atelier is located in an exceptional setting, aboard a barge nestled in a green setting in Essonne, south of Paris. It is said to be the only printing press in the world on a boat! We are therefore naturally very sensitive to the impact we have on the environment, which guides all our production choices. We carefully select FSC-certified and if possible recycled papers, as well as environmentally friendly manufacturing techniques and processes, including limiting and recycling our waste.
Denis, art printer: After several years in finance, Denis threw himself into the Letterpress adventure in 2013 with Mylène. He went to train at the Design College in Brisbane, Australia, then completed his training with a major printer in Boston. He is a detail-freak who will always go further to achieve the perfect result.
Mylène, artistic director:
After studying cinema at the ENS Louis Lumière and graphic design at the Ecole Estienne in Paris, she worked for several years for major Parisian agencies before creating L'Atelier Letterpress with Denis in 2013. She is passionate about typography, calligraphy, vintage graphic design and music.
Letterpress: impression of emotion:
As soon as you run your finger over a model from L'Atelier Letterpress, the emotion is there, palpable. The old-fashioned printing has left a slight hollow in the raw and generous texture of our exceptional papers, giving full meaning to the vintage-inspired design.
Take your time... It's Slow Print:
Printing a pattern from L'Atelier Letterpress takes one to three days, a lot of patience, and requires all the know-how of our master printer, Denis. He starts by mixing the inks by hand and then inks the rollers, and when it is well distributed he positions the relief plate of the first color on Heidi, our beautiful Heidelberg press from the 50s. Heidi comes to life, begins to breathe (thanks to her pneumatic sheet picking system) and Denis begins the meticulous work of setting up the printing of the first color, until he obtains the desired inking, precision and sinking.
Once the first color is finished, he meticulously cleans the press to remove all traces of this first color, and repeats the same process to print the other color(s), paying attention to their balance while letting them live.
Deep, bright colors:
Letterpress colours are full and pure because we have at our disposal the full range of beautiful Pantone colours including neon and metallic colours, unlike classic printing (four-colour), which uses four basic colours rasterised to obtain the others through an optical effect, which has a mechanically duller rendering.
We can also replace the ink with the refinement of hot foil stamping for metallic and even holographic renderings, always with that delicious hollow.
Seal of Authenticity:
All our art prints are signed with a seal of authenticity, which highlights all the care we have put into making them so that you can admire them for a long time.
Enjoy your L'Atelier Letterpress posters and cards for a long time
You will be able to enjoy your L'Atelier Letterpress copies for a long time because they stand the test of time very well and will not lose any of their beautiful colors.
The light will play with the hollow of the print and you will be able to discover them slightly different throughout the day and the seasons.
