"OUR REASON OF BEING IS BASED ON THE HARMONIOUS COMBINATION OF KNOW-HOW AND CREATION"
We are two sisters, two partners, two creatives.
From our parents, textile experts, we inherited a passion for craftsmanship, handmade and excellence. Building an ethical brand, in line with these values, seemed obvious to us. Loyal to the French entrepreneurial cause, we have undertaken a journey that brings together a lot of emotions and humanity.
Soiyage is envisioned as a poetic escape, for souls in search of freedom and social impact. Combining elegance and modernity, we create exceptional silk scarves for a clientele that looks like us. Determined, fair and sensitive to the world around her.
Our inspirations are rooted in the places that have enchanted our history.
Our first collection is an ode to Paris, which overwhelmed us from the first meeting with its cultural richness and beauty. Paris, City of Light, capital of love and romanticism.
Mel and Sisi
The house is part of a process of promoting and protecting crafts of excellence and craftsmanship.
In this vein, we work with the last silk workshop in France to perpetuate, manually, an ancestral printing method called flat frame or Lyonnaise printing. Our production is carried out by a French family business whose artisanal skills and know-how have marked excellence in silk production since 1890. In line with the values of the house, the choice was naturally oriented towards local production to safeguard the heritage of silk in Lyon, its know-how and its jobs.
CONSIDERING NATURE
The design of our creations is part of a virtuous and ecological circle.
Local manufacturing: the house has chosen to produce locally. We value the know-how of the craftsmen of excellence and support employment in France.
A natural and sustainable material: our collection is based exclusively on silk, a natural and ecological fiber known for its many virtues for skin and hair.
Eco-friendly and sustainable packaging: our creations are carefully stored by hand in recycled cardboard boxes. The house has voluntarily opted for cylindrical packaging to offer a container that can be reused at will.
Particular attention to the use of resources: in the workshop, the fabric is optimally valued by our experts. The scraps are used to make small silk accessories.
Soiyage has chosen the most prestigious of materials for the making of its creations. We chose it for its softness, shine and resistance.
Silk has survived the centuries in the form of rich fabrics and remains a staple in haute couture.
The silk trades require specialized expertise. In the silk workshop in Lyon, our team deploys its know-how to make the creations with the greatest delicacy. Our seamstresses refine the squares with a beautiful hand-rolled hem to offer you exceptional scarves.
OVER TIME, THE LYON SILK FACTORY
The road to travel between China, the mythical homeland of silk, and the Western world was long.
Two millennia have passed since the "wool of the trees", a mysterious product transformed into thin transparent veils, made its entry into ancient Roman society.
Long the prerogative of the Eastern Roman Empire, silk continued its journey and dazzled Western Europe during the Crusades in the Middle Ages.
In the sixteenth century, by virtue of a privilege granted by the King of France, Lyon became the only general silk warehouse authorized in the kingdom. The "weavers of silk, gold and silver" then settled in Lyon. Many silk workshops opened their doors.
In the middle of the nineteenth century, the silk industry represented more than 800 companies and 125,000 trades.
Today, the Fabrique Lyonnaise is weakened by foreign competition and crises.
Soiyage is part of this approach to defend and promote crafts of excellence and craftsmanship.
Alongside other institutions and actors, the house works to safeguard the heritage of silk in Lyon, its know-how and its jobs.
In this vein, we are working with the last workshop in France to perpetuate flat frame or Lyonnaise printing manually.
This traditional process was invented in Lyon around 1850 and long used by Lyon factories to make prints on fabric.
Flat frame printing makes it possible to create decorations in many colours (up to 45) and is perfectly suited to small quantities and the creation of unique pieces.
The incomparable crossing, depth and relief of the colours obtained by this technique naturally destine it for the printing of traditional silk scarves.
Printing with a screen printing works according to a principle similar to that of stencilling. The flat frame consists of a metal frame to the size of the product to be made and a polyester tergal gauze. Beforehand, this tergal was photo-engraved with the pattern to be printed, leaving room for permeable (the pattern) and waterproof areas, thus creating an extremely precise stencil. The colour is then spread with a scraper on the surface of the frame and passes through the remaining porous parts corresponding to the design, thus transferring it to the fabric by colouring.
AN ANCESTRAL METHOD, A WORD FROM THE WORKSHOP DIRECTOR
Flat frame printing is a slow and demanding process that involves various steps: choice of design, colors and silk, preparation of the printing tables, fixing and tensioning of the silk, making the printing paste, printing, drying... Making a good impression is not easy, it requires know-how acquired over many years: stretching the silk well, finding the right viscosity of the paste, obtaining the conformity and unison of the colors, making the right gesture with the squeegee, knowing how to place the frame with perfect precision, knowing how to use and develop one's artistic sensitivity....
