THE ORIGIN AND CHALLENGES OF UPCYCLING

The idea of origin comes from the tradition of sailors, pioneers of the upcycling, to recover the old veils to make them cabas, tool bags, vareuses or pants, sheets, torchons. At the time of the sailing navy, the sails were hemp and linen, then cotton. They were sluggish every year to last longer.

Vent de Voyage also recycles the drops of sails and wind fabric manufacturers. Dye errors then become interesting and design patterns.

Today, the sails of the boats are made of polyester, carbon, kevlar, more solid and technical materials for racing boats, which are more resistant to moisture.

Less natural materials... hence an even greater challenge to reuse this raw material so that it is not destroyed in nature. And an ideal destination for these sails in luggage storage: the durability and conservation properties of these materials are perfect for travel bags and handbags!

The Origins of Vent De Voyage

VENT DE VOYAGE, PIONEER IN FRANCE IN THE MANUFACTURE OF UPCYCLED SAIL

Christine, architect, and Yann, sailor of offshore races for 20 years, then preparer of racing boats with expertise in sailors (nothing, sailing), gather their know-how to create the art of turning sails of boats. Bags, Baggage, accessories and unique decoration items: the new adventure of sailing back to port! Christine drew the models, Lucie sewed them, Yann worked the leather by hand and hand, took care of the sailor, and above all, visited the yards and ports to recover sails at the end of maritime life. They start with five bags for sale, and the sewing machine in the shop. Success is at the rendezvous and the rush of this new activity! First, the Brussels press, thanks to a trophy of innovation. Then, on the occasion of the departure of the Route du Rhum in 2002, Vent de Voyage has benefited from a national mediatization thanks to its pioneering efforts in recycling: Tokia Saïfi, Secretary of State for Sustainable Development, visited the shop, which sparked Telematin’s interest in France 2. The mediatization gives a good boost to the activity that remains of course artisanal, the bags are sold to Japan, Scandinavia! Christine innovates with web activity, remote selling, customization, customization.

From the beginning, Vent de voyage recovers and recycles used large racing sails in racing stables. Some come from famous boats like Fuji or Gitana, today that of Gilles Lamiré, GROUPE GCA-1001 SOURIRES.

Other veils come from simpler stories, thanks to people who love the sea, such as Optimist’s sails brought back by the parents of a young girl. She made championships all over the world. His veils had, at each competition, been checked by the jagger. To realize the bag, a birthday present, "we used the pieces where we saw the gauge pads. It was wonderful to do.. Or even recently, a nautical club member from the Hauts-de-France spent by chance in store, who recovers for Vent de Voyage a dozen " vintage" veils very colorful!

We try to recover the maximum of the material of the veils: the routings, the numbers, the tips, the jauge pads, the eyelets can be recovered and are part of the history of the veil, its charm. A raw material in the rich history of adventures that make us travel!

THE MAKING

We preserve in our workshop transferred to Dinard in 2018, our artisanal production model. Our know-how is protected as a treasure, our seams transmit it with passion, precision, to create high quality, durable products. We keep this artisanal and sustainable character. Moreover, we repair the damaged bags, “as long as they can last.”.

The difference?

The attention to detail, customised finishes made by hand, guided by the eye, a "façon" inspired by the sails, from the eye to the techniques of the mackerel: stitching of handmade leather inserts, seams sewn in spicy with a hollow needle ... Craft know-how is the result of years of work and research. The models are customizable upon request.

And also, original forms, unique and sometimes exclusive models, in the tendencies of French leather goods. The design of a bag requires one hour for the simplest and up to four hours for more complicated travel bags.

THE RESULT

The result: each product comes out of Dinard's workshop with its personality, a recognized quality and solidity. Each bag is unique: you don’t have the same veil twice, you’re not going to cut into the same place.
